Biography

Marie-Sophie Silan holds a PhD in Law delivered from the University of Liège and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Institut für Römisches Rechts und Antike Rechtsgeschichte of the University of Vienna. Formally a Research Fellow of the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique-FNRS (2020-2024), her doctoral dissertation examined the relationships between law, gender, and the status of women in the private law of the former Prince-Bishopric of Liège, at the intersection of customary law, notarial practice, and the ius commune. As part of her postdoctoral research, she focuses on dowry law and, more broadly, on women's property in ancient Rome.
